NFC vs QR Code for Business Cards: Which Should You Use?
Use both. NFC when you are standing in front of someone with a phone in their hand, a QR code everywhere else. They are not competing choices, and picking one to the exclusion of the other is how people end up unable to share a card at the moment it matters.
That is the short answer. The rest of this is why, and where each one actually breaks.
They fail differently, which is the whole point
The useful comparison is not which is faster or more modern. It is what happens on a bad day, because a sharing method that works ninety percent of the time is a method you cannot rely on in front of a customer.
NFC needs cooperation from the other phone. It has to support tag reading, be awake, be unlocked, and be held with its antenna near yours. Antenna placement varies by model and is not marked, so "hold your phones together" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. When it works it is the most impressive way to exchange details. When it does not, there is nothing to look at and no error message, just two people rotating phones.
A QR code needs a camera and light. That is a much lower bar, and it is met by every phone made in the last decade. Its failures are physical rather than technical: a dim screen in bright sun, glare on a laminated stand, or a printed code that was resized by someone who did not understand that the pattern has to stay square and sharp.
Where NFC genuinely wins
It removes a step. There is no camera to open, no framing, no distance to judge. Held correctly, the card opens. In a queue, at a door, or across a table where somebody is already holding their phone, that difference is real.
It also works when a screen is not involved at all. A tag under a table, inside a menu, or on a piece of equipment lets an object carry a card without anyone printing anything. A QR code cannot be invisible; an NFC tag can be, which is occasionally exactly what you want.
And it is harder to copy casually. Anyone can photograph a QR code off a stand and reuse it. Cloning a tag takes intent and equipment.
Where a QR code genuinely wins
Reach, first. A QR code works on essentially every phone in circulation, including old ones, borrowed ones, and the ones belonging to people who have never knowingly used NFC. If you are putting something on a stand and walking away, this matters more than elegance.
Distance, second. Someone can scan a code from across a room, from a slide at the end of a talk, or from a photo they took of your slide an hour later. NFC requires contact. A conference audience can capture a QR code simultaneously in a way that no tap-based method can match.
Print, third. A code costs nothing to add to anything already being printed. Tags cost money per unit and have to be attached.
The iPhone question, answered honestly
This is the part most comparisons skip. iPhone support for reading NFC tags is real but conditional, and the conditions are the kind you meet in a busy room.
Background tag reading, where the phone notices a tag without any app being open, arrived with the iPhone XS and XR. Models from the iPhone 7 through the X can read tags only through an app already open and scanning, which in practice means they will not read your tag when you hold it near them. Even on a supported model the phone must have been unlocked at least once since it was last switched on, and it only scans while in use.

What this means for what you buy
If you are equipping yourself for events, the order is: get the link first, because it is free and never fails. Add a QR code, because it costs nothing and covers everyone. Add NFC last, because it is the one that costs money and the one that impresses people.
That order feels backwards to anyone who arrived here wanting to buy a tap-to-share card, and it is still the right order. The tag is an upgrade to a working setup, not the foundation of one.
For a stand or a reception desk, put both on the same piece of material. A tag behind a printed card with a code on the front costs very little and means you never have to explain to a visitor why nothing happened. Writing your card to a tag covers which chips to buy and what gets written to them.
The one thing both share
Whichever method carries it, what should be on the other end is a link rather than a frozen copy of your details. A QR code encoding a vCard, or a tag holding only contact fields, produces a card that was correct on the day it was made and silently wrong afterwards. A link stays right because the details live behind it, and it also lets you see that the card was opened at all.
That is the difference that outlasts the NFC versus QR argument entirely.
