Do Digital Business Cards Work on iPhone? What Actually Happens When You Tap
Yes, with one distinction worth understanding: receiving a digital business card works on every iPhone, because a card is a web page. Reading an NFC tag is the part with conditions, and those conditions are the reason a tap sometimes does nothing.
This covers what actually happens on an iPhone in each case, so you know which failures are your problem and which are not.
Receiving a card: always works
When someone shares a digital business card with you by link, by QR code, or by a tap that your phone did pick up, what opens is a web page in Safari. There is nothing to install and no account to make. The card shows their details, and a save button downloads a contact file that iOS adds to your Contacts app.
This is true on any iPhone still running a current browser. If someone tells you their card needs an app on your end to be viewed, that is a property of their product rather than of iPhones.
One thing to know about the saved contact: it is a copy taken at that moment. If they change their number later, your saved contact does not follow. The link does stay current, so it is worth keeping alongside the contact if the relationship matters.
Reading an NFC tag: works from the iPhone XS onward
Apple introduced background tag reading with the iPhone XS and iPhone XR. On those models and later, the phone notices an NFC tag by itself and shows a notification. You tap the notification and the card opens. Nothing needs to be open beforehand.
Models from the iPhone 7 through the iPhone X can read NFC tags, but only through an app that is already open and scanning for them. Holding one of those phones against a tag does nothing on its own, which reads to the person holding it as the tag being broken.
Two further conditions apply even on supported models, and both catch people out:
- The phone must have been unlocked at least once since it was last powered on. Straight off a reboot, background reading is inert.
- Apple only scans while the phone is in use. A locked handset sitting on a table will not pick up a tag underneath it, which is why unattended tag placements need a QR code beside them.
There is no setting to turn background tag reading on. It either applies to the model or it does not, so if a colleague's iPhone reads a tag and yours does not, the difference is the hardware rather than something you have configured wrongly.
Sharing from an iPhone: the honest position
Reading a tag and writing one are different capabilities, and most digital business card apps that write tags do it from Android. AtlasLinq is currently an Android app, so writing your card to a tag is done from an Android phone.
That does not stop an iPhone user having a card. The card is a web page with its own address, so an iPhone user can share it by link, by QR code, by AirDrop, or from a tag somebody else wrote for them. What they cannot do today is program a blank tag from the phone in their pocket.
What about NameDrop?
NameDrop is Apple's own contact exchange, introduced in iOS 17.1. Hold the top of one iPhone near another and both see a prompt to swap contact cards. It is on by default, and it works well for what it does.
It is worth knowing its boundaries rather than treating it as a replacement:
- Both devices must be on iOS 17.1 or later. An iPhone and an Android phone cannot NameDrop, and that is roughly half the room at most events.
- It only creates new contacts. Apple is explicit that NameDrop does not update an existing contact, so it does not help you keep in touch with people you have already met.
- It shares your name plus a number or email you pick. There is no room for a portfolio link, a booking page, or anything that answers the question a stranger actually has about you.
- You learn nothing afterwards. There is no signal about whether the exchange led anywhere.
If you meet people who all use recent iPhones and you only need a phone number to change hands, NameDrop is genuinely the fastest route and you do not need anything else. If you need to reach Android users, include links, or know whether your card was opened, it is not built for that.
Practical setup for an iPhone-heavy audience
Lead with the QR code rather than the tap. In a mixed room it works for everyone, including the older iPhones that will silently ignore a tag, and it does not require you to establish which model someone has before offering to share.
Keep your link somewhere you can paste in one gesture. Most exchanges that go wrong in person get rescued by sending a link, and fumbling for it undoes the impression that a digital card was supposed to make.
If you use tags in a public place, always print a code beside them. The visitor whose phone cannot read the tag is exactly the visitor who will assume your company is careless rather than that their phone is old.
